Southway is a medium sized junior school in the northern part of Burgess Hill. Nearly all of our pupils transfer from the feeder infant school, The Gattons, at the end of KS1. We have a stable school population, with on average only 5-10 children moving into or out of the school each academic year. All year groups are divided into three classes, the number of children in a class ranges from 22 to 30. In addition to teachers, we have a team of permanent teaching assistants who are placed in year groups where there is most need, and a full-time Learning Mentor. Our children are happy and enjoy coming to school, and their behaviour is good.
We are blessed with having large school grounds, which include a large pond, an adventure playground, a tyre park and extensive fields. We place great value on learning outdoors.
We also have an ‘open door’ policy and actively encourage and welcome parents and carers to become more involved in school life. We take a creative approach to learning, developing ‘Learning Journeys’, in which foundation subjects are linked wherever possible by an over-arching topic. These are enthusiastically received by children.
Our motto, Learning and Achieving Together, reflects our commitment to working with children, families, other professionals and each other in order to help children make the best possible progress. We try hard to ensure that all children feel they can shine and that they are valued. Respect – for self and others – is at the heart of our school vision and aims, a quality with which we hope to equip children for life, to help them grow up as responsible, caring adults.
